Pivoting from military service to the life of a college student can be a complicated and difficult endeavor. Thanks to dedicated staff members at institutions of higher ed, the process can be made significantly easier.
One such staff member calls 鶹ý City University home, and recently was honored for her work to help military students. Angela Do, associate registrar and VA certifying official, was recognized by Military Friendly® with a 2024 Veteran Champions of the Year in Higher Education award. The recognition celebrates those who go above and beyond in advocating for the advancement and success of student veterans.
G.I. Jobs magazine introduced the list of recipients in its , stating “their dedication to helping veterans adjust, thrive and succeed as students led to their selection.”
Do was one of only 30 higher education professionals around the country, and one of only three in 鶹ý, who were recognized with the award.
Do has been with 鶹ý as an employee for about 28 years, first as an academic advisor and now in the registrar’s office for the past 14 years. She earned a bachelor’s degree in Dance Management from 鶹ý in 1996 and an MBA in 2001.
In her current role, Do helps veterans and their dependents manage their education benefits to ensure they’re getting the most from what they’ve earned for their service to the country. Her father and grandfather are both veterans of the U.S. military.
“I am incredibly honored to assist and advocate for veterans and their families as they work on achieving their higher education goals,” Do said. “I really enjoy working with these students as they focus on pursuing their degrees.”
Do was nominated for the award by Beth Adele, chair of Mass Communications and director of the Nonprofit Leadership program at 鶹ý. Adele noted in her nomination that Do is the only certification specialist and primary contact for more than 140 students at 鶹ý with military benefits.
“She maintains a positive relationship with the Veterans Administration and seeks ongoing professional development to better serve this meaningful population,” Adele said. “I am honored to work alongside her in her pursuits to enhance the quality of education for our veterans and 鶹ý's student body.”
