Medical amnesty is meant to ensure and protect your health and well-being by giving you the peace of mind to seek medical attention in an alcohol or drug related emergency without having to worry about matters of student misconduct.
We recognize that the potential for disciplinary action by the Dean of Students Office may act as a barrier when you seek medical assistance for yourselves or others during an alcohol or other drug-related emergencies. This is why we established a medical amnesty protocol. In these incidents, the primary concern is the well-being, health, and safety of students, therefore:
Students needing and seeking medical assistance during an alcohol or other drug-related emergency will not face formal conduct action by the Dean of Students Office for the mere possession or use of alcohol or drugs.
A few important points:
- The recipients of medical attention will avoid formal conduct action through the nonacademic conduct process if they participate in an honest and forthright meeting with a representative from the Dean of Students Office within five business days of the incident and comply with any recommendations prescribed by the office. The Dean of Students or his/her designee may extend the five-business day requirement as necessary.
- Any student organization seeking medical assistance for yourselves or another during an alcohol or other drug-related emergency will not face formal conduct action by the Dean of Students Office for the mere possession or use of alcohol or drugs.
- Students and organizations that assist those in need may also have to meet certain conditions for medical amnesty, but they will not be charged under the Student Code of Conduct.
- This policy applies only to alcohol or other drug-related medical emergencies and not to other prohibited conduct such as assault, property damage or distribution of illicit substances.
- You must obtain medical attention at the time of the incident.
- You must meet with a representative from the Dean of Students Office within five business days of the incident and agree to comply with the conditions set forth by the representative.
- If these conditions are met, there will be no conduct case and the incident will not become part of the student's record.
- You can make use of the medical amnesty policy only once, as it is an opportunity for to learn from a mistake. After the first incident, the availability of medical amnesty to the student is at the discretion of the Dean of Students Office.
- If you do not follow these stipulations, you may not qualify for medical amnesty and may be required to participate in the conduct process.
